I dont run damn small linux, and I am not sure why you shouldnt just install ubuntu on that machine anyway. It should pretty much work out of the box.

Dont know for sure, but isn't DSL suposed to be installed on a usb key, hence the small size?
I know slax is supposed to do that and i could imagine DSL being a bit like it.

For starters in linux ubuntu would be a very nice choice.

The last few years Ubuntu is the easiest choice if you just want to have an alternative to windows. I use it on all my computers. Its really easy to get your hands on, you can even order a CD for free :)

you can download ubuntu, mount it, install it inside windows (takes 5+gb) and then just reboot into it, you don't even need to burn it out or format, or even make a new petition. it doesn't get easier..

Lol :D

Normally you don't have to pay for Linux, unless you want technical support (SuSE and Redhat). And yes, it has a gui (so does damn small linux). The GUI is called a window manager, and normally you would chose Gnome or KDE. (I use Gnome, and its the default in Ubuntu). The desktop looks a bit like windows 98/2000 (which is what you want, trust me).

To experience what it looks like I think you should try to download the ubuntu live CD and boot from it. It wont install unless you ask for it, and you can try it out, to see if you like it.

No , I wasn't referring to the window manager , I was referring to the Install Gui. Do I have to learn complicated codes and stuff or it has an Install GUI ?

Whoa , I need something smaller ( that's why I asked about DSL ) because I don't want to install ubuntu on my Pentium D pc , I want to install it on my Pentium 2 .And that computer has only 4.5 GB :D

this was only for the install inside, you can install it on less if you make a patetion, and without all extra programs. but i still think you should go with ubuntu..

Boot up on the live CD and double click the install icon. It is a gui all the way through. At some point it may turn into an ascii GUI, but that doesnt make it harder to figure out. I strongly suggest that you create a dedicated ubuntu partition (it will work on one single partition, unlike older linuxes). Since its your old pentium machine, I figure you may not have any data on it that you need to save, so just let ubuntu have all your harddrive.

If you need a minimal installation you should go for the server edition (which is the same, except it doesnt come with Gnome or KDE as default). But if you have 4.5 gb I am sure that the normal ubuntu can install.

I cant guarantee that its faster, but it is certainly less anoying than windows. You get some performance boost from not needing to run any antivirus software. Windows games will run a tad slower than on an optimal windows xp system. But you get it for free, and you don't need to restart after every damn update, except those for the kernel (this goes for anything but windows btw :)). Which graphics card are you planning on using? ATI cards can be quite hard to make running well...

as I was saying , I plan to install Linux on the old machine not on the new one . And the P2 isn't connected to the internet :D . Also , I have an Nvidia Geforce 4 I think ..... it's an old video card anyway ...... ( the motherboard is even older , I was surprised the video card was working ...) . It doesn't need any drivers right ? I don't have drivers :D . the P2 has 9 years .
