Alrighty, this is a more advanced tutorial than the one Brammer made. Let's start, shall we?

Select the Arch tool and create a 512x512x64 brush. You'll notice it won't create a brush immediately, instead a window pops up.
Now, look at the picture below and put in the same settings (change to your likings if 1: you have done this tutorial or 2: if you already have experience doing this).

Image

Now hit OK and, wow, a 1/4 part of a circle!

Image

The default setting for Number of Sides is 8, I changed it to 12 just to make it look more nice. As you can see, I already gave it that road texture from cs_747.wad. Now, open the Texture Application tool and select the first face. Rotate a bit (read: small bit) and hit the C button under justify (C stand for Center).

Image

Yeah, -4.00 degrees, that's what I need for the first face as you can see. Let's repeat the process... just increase (or decrease) the degrees on the next face... repeat, repeat, repeat, and on. Now let's take a look at how it would look like if we had it all done:

Image

YES! A nice curve! But wait, what is a road without a sidewalk? Let's add that in, shall we? Select the Arch tool again and create a 576x576x64 brush. Oh, hold on a sec, I chose that nice fitting asphalt texture for the sidewalk! Ah, here comes the popup window again.

Image

Take a look at the next picture to see the settings I used:

Image

Hit that OK button and you'll see another series of brushes has been created... move it around a bit and 'connect' it to our curve we made earlier ago, I also made the brushes a bit shorter, they're now 16 units high! Take a look:

Image

OK, right side done... now let's do the other. Create a 384x384x16 brush (yes, with the Arch tool, of course!).

Image

Agh, that damn popup again... oh wait, we need that popup! Let's see what I did:

Image

Yes, move the group of brushes around a bit and 'connect' it. Wayhey! That's a mighty fine curve we have there!!

Image

Ah, goodness... let's take an even closer look:

Image

Goody! OK, that's about it! Some sidenotes though:

- It would be best to create arches with the null texture, why? Ask the pro's, it's just good :) !
- As you can see, there are quite some brushes there for just a nice curve... as you already might know, more brushes increase the r_speeds. However, this shouldn't impact the r_speeds that much.

Another sidenote: THINGS IN THIS TUTORIAL MIGHT CHANGE!

Credits:

Brammer, for the idea and sending me the .wad file.
Silver, hosting.
Me... obvious  :P !

Changes:
I finally know what the correct word is... a curve!
Some typo's
Bolding some word groups

did you compile that just to see how manny errors you got? Perhaps none, but then try to have a look at it in halflife with gl_wireframe 2 and see if somethings look weird...

I opened a new map, made the tutorial, and then closed it... I didn't bother compiling it... maybe I should do that.

I'm gonna do it right away.

-EDIT-

No errors in compile... everything seems fine ingame... around 120 w_poly.

What were you getting at, egir?

Perhaps you should extend the tutorial from the very specific road making into maybe, general use of the arch tool?

If you just make an arch, and then make another one, I simply couldn't imagine that they would align so good that they would not act just a bit weird ingame, but if you say that they're not, then thats how it is ofcourse. You do specify what the wpoly are, which might be high, but I'm not sure, I think a gl_wireframe 2 screenshot would give any problems away, so that we can see if there are any of if there aren't anny.

the arch tool is rather amazing... Cant load up CS coz My steam aint working, but Ive used the archtool several times before, and it seals up thins very well. Just keep in mind that you have to go look it thorugh if its an advanced brush you are gonna create (EI a stairway). You might need to fix a few things with the vertex tool

I always use the arch tool. In fact, the many uses of the arch tool deserve a tutorial for that. I shall get to work on that.

Some of my arch tool work! Looks wonderful when lit!

For the sidewalk to be smaller enter a lower value in the Wall width box. I used 64 as you can see on the screenshots.

The roadway and sidewalk doesn't align. I did eeverything like you told to do. What's the problem? :(

EDIT: I figured the left side (384x384) works but the other one doesn't

no such thing as bumping when it comes to tutorials.

I think you are right, 64 doesn't seem a good width for a road :)
