How to use the pointfile method with Valve Hammer
By Iceman

Leaks are nasty and not very fun to have in your map. In this guide Iceman explains how to find and fix leaks just using the pointfile method in Valve Hammer.

All thoose leaks, allways are there something that you haven't made as it supposed to be made and now you have some kind of an error.

If you look at the picture below that leak isn't very easy to find inside your big map, it's so tiny and small but it's still cousing an nasty error.

An error all of us mappers have had or are having them right now. Therefor will I try to help you get rid of this little problem with this guide on how to fix and finx leaks.

I assume that you got the newest version of the Valve Hammer. (beta 3.5) If you don't go and download it right away on your download section.

Enough talking, let's continue with the guide.

Step 1

You get this when you compile with Valve Hammer (not very good) or with your batch compiler (there will come a guide on how to compile with a batch compiler) then it's not very good, and you will think "Oh f**k it, i got a leak, now I'm screwed" but you are not! Just keep reading...

Step 2

Go into Map, then click on the Load Pointfile flag, (as the picture shows)

Step 3

Locate your compiled map, (in my case it's D:\Spel\Half-Life\cstrike\maps) and click on either the mapname.lin file or the mapname.pts as the picture shows.

Step 4

Then your map will look something like this (if you got a leak error)

Step 5

Now locate the end of the line in your map, either the blue end (the start of the line) or the red end (the end of the line). Then press on the little Camera and cruise around inside your map using the Camera view. The line will guide you to the leak, fix it and you are done.

Step 6

Now you just have to go in under Map, then press on the Unload Pointfile flag. Compile and voila you got no leaks left

Step 7

Don't have to be a Step 7: But what the hell ;o).. Make sure that you fix the leak, if you still got the leak problem, don't start screaming, compile again and do the whole process over again from Step 1: ... Hope this helped you from getting gray hairs over your nasty leak problems...
