How to make a beach by pyrocow
One time I just wanted to get a transition effect with waves for water at a beach instead of the end of the water being a flat line against the beach. So this is what I came up with.

First, make the terrain. I made a beach with a flat part, a slanted part in the middle, and then another flat part.

Next add the water. Choose a water texture, and make the brush go past where it meets the edge of the beach (into it kind of). Then right-click the water and choose "Tie To Entity." Select func_water from the list, and change the wave height property 1.2 (or something else if you want). You can also change Render Mode to Texture, then set FX Amount to 100 for transparent water.

After that, just add a sky, spawn, and a light to compile and test it.
